Pączki (pronounced "poonch-key") are rich, deep-fried Polish doughnuts made from an enriched dough, traditionally filled with fruit preserves like plum or rose hip jam, and topped with powdered sugar or glaze. They are a traditional treat for Fat Thursday (Tłusty Czwartek) in Poland and Fat Tuesday (Pączki Day) in the U.S., eaten to use up rich ingredients before Lent. While classic fillings are traditional, modern versions include custard, blueberry, and other flavors.
